Savoie, France's ski capital

Savoie holds the highest density of ski areas in France: more than 1,600 kilometres of pistes combined, world-famous resorts and smaller, more intimate ski villages. The department splits into four main geographic ski zones: Tarentaise, Maurienne, Beaufortain and the southern stations — each with its own identity.

Choosing a bed & breakfast rather than a resort apartment changes the experience. You gain warmth, authenticity and usually a better breakfast. You lose some immediacy next to the lifts, but Savoyard hosts know the shuttles, the quiet parking lots and the underused lifts. Many also offer a heated ski room, a small detail that matters a lot over a full week.

The Tarentaise, the heart of high-altitude skiing

The Tarentaise valley groups the highest ski areas:

• The Three Valleys (Val Thorens, Méribel, Courchevel, Les Menuires), the largest linked ski area in the world with about 600 km of pistes.
• Paradiski (Les Arcs, La Plagne, Peisey-Vallandry), 425 km of pistes connected by the Vanoise Express cable car.
• Tignes and Val d'Isère, known as Espace Killy, with 300 km of highly technical pistes.

The season typically runs from late November to early May, with reliable high-altitude snow above 1,800 m. Bed & breakfasts are more often found in the valley villages (Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Moûtiers, Aime, Bozel), from which shuttles reach the resorts in a matter of minutes.

The Maurienne, a quieter alternative

Further south, the Maurienne offers a different face: smaller resorts, village atmosphere, on average more accessible lift pass prices. Valloire, Valmeinier, Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves, Les Karellis, Aussois, Val Cenis — each has its character. Aussois and Bonneval-sur-Arc remain must-sees for preserved charm and access to the Vanoise National Park.

For a first ski stay or a family that values quiet, the Maurienne often makes a better compromise than the Tarentaise.

Beaufortain and intermediate valleys

Les Saisies, Arêches-Beaufort and Crest-Voland offer gentler skiing in a spectacular setting, with Mont Blanc visible on the horizon. Arêches is especially popular for ski touring and its family atmosphere. Beaufortain is also the home of Beaufort AOP cheese, which largely explains the local culinary identity.

Nearby: beyond the slopes

A bed & breakfast stay is a good chance to step away from the pistes. Three ideas:

• Lac du Bourget and Aix-les-Bains, the largest natural lake in France, reachable from Maurienne or Chambéry for a non-ski day.
• The Vanoise National Park, the first French national park, created in 1963, where snowshoeing is possible all season and ibex can often be spotted even at lower altitudes.
• The thermal baths of Brides-les-Bains, La Léchère or Salins-les-Thermes, perfect for recovery after a ski day.

Practical: skiing from a bed & breakfast

A few things to check before booking:

• Distance to the nearest cable car or gondola, not just "the resort". Some listings advertise "close to La Plagne" but sit 25 minutes away on an uphill winter road.
• Availability of shuttles between the valley and the resort. Many Savoyard municipalities run a free service for residents and visitors during the season.
• The ski storage room and its equipment: heated, secure, with individual racks.
• Snow conditions at lower elevations: bed & breakfasts below 1,000 m can see access roads get tricky after heavy snowfall.

In high season (Christmas holidays, February and Easter), rates rise sharply and availability shrinks. Mid-January and mid-March usually offer the best mix of good snow and reasonable prices.
